Kids in College at Miami University

Kids in College (KIC) is a non-credit program offered through Miami University’s Lifelong Learning office for area youth grades K-8. The classes are designed to support Ohio Department of Education standards and are academically-based and inquiry-oriented. Youth who participate in the KIC program are actively involved in experiential learning that develops skills and knowledge while making friends and having fun! Classes are enrollment contingent with no more than a 15:1 student-faculty ratio and may be paid for through Miami University payroll deduction.

All Day Option

Sign your kids up for a morning and afternoon session, and we will provide a supervised lunch period! Students should bring their own lunch and beverage.

Make It Take It: Science Projects You Take Home - THANKS for the GREAT class!

Get Creative!

In this exciting, hands-on program you will discover how amazing science is. You will make and take home a wide assortment of toys designed to teach you science concepts in a hands-on way. Grow your own crystal tree. Make an energy bead bracelet and watch as those amazing beads turn from white to a rainbow of colors before your eyes.

Build a working electric motor. Make your own sharpie shirt and learn some cool chemistry. Make silly putty, glowing goo, green flubber and other cool projects.

AND by the way... we will make ice cream in our own amazing, different, sciensational way!

If so, then this class is for you! Discover an actual dinosaur bone, identify 20 million year old sharks’ teeth, mammal bones, and more!

Visit Miami University’s Limper Geology Museum. Explore Miami University’s natural areas for fossils with geologist Dr. Kendall Hauer!

Explore the world of Chemistry!

Explore the wonderful scientific world of chemistry in this workshop!

Learn to make batteries from fruits or potatoes. Make a fantastic crystal tree, discover the secrets of invisible ink, and work with powerful magnets.

Use our microscopes to investigate prepared slides and be a chemical detective by making glob from glue. You’ll even learn how to use paper chromatography to separate colors. Make dirty pennies turn clean and clean pennies turn green!

Advanced Robotics: The Ultimate Experience - THANKS for the GREAT class!

YOU are the creator!

Build a Robot Dinosaur, Mars Cruiser, Aquabot, Space Copter, Desert Rover, or “The Five Foot Tall Commander Robot.” Build as many as you can in the time that we have.

You can also build your own robots with our motors, wires, controllers, and wheels. Use your imagination! It’s a challenge, but you can do it if you think!

Get ready for Sumo Battles, the Battle Box, and Sciensational Workshops’ Build-a-Thon!

Eco-Adventures: Exploring Nature @ Miami University -THANKS for the GREAT class!

Eco-AdventuresDo you love plants and animals?

Do you love being outdoors? Fascinated with bugs, plants, and animals? Learn all about the natural history of our area through hands-on field explorations in Miami University’s Natural Areas as well as through investigations at Miami University’s museums. Be an eco-adventurist this summer!

Monday - Friday July 6 - 10 | 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Instructors: Mike Wright, Assistant Director at the Hefner Zoology Museum and Steve Eshbaugh, Environmental Educator at the Center for Environmental Education, each have over 20 years experience as naturalists and environmental educators.

Super Sleuth

NEW featured class!

Be a Super Sleuth!

You will be the super science sleuth in this exciting class! Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform as many as 15 different experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved.

Search for evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery.

You will dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing for fibers, use chemistry to identify mystery substances, and much more! You will then use your skills to solve crimes of the century!

No refunds for cancellations made within one week prior to the event or class.
To officially withdraw from a class you must notify Lifelong Learning. Failure to attend, or notification to the instructor, does not constitute an official withdraw. There will be a $10 non-refundable administrative fee applied to all cancellations. Miami University reserves the right to change instructors and postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrollments or unforeseen circumstances.
