Project Description
The Assessing Critical Thinking project (ACT) is now
in its fourth round of faculty projects. The ACT project
was created to assist faculty in, 1) designing and
modifying assignments to encourage students' development
of critical thinking skills, and 2) assessing students'
critical thinking skills.
Participants work in teams of 3-4 (led by a faculty
or staff member trained in the assessment of critical
thinking) to:
identify expected student learning
outcomes for critical thinking that are discipline
and course appropriate
modify and adapt
(or create) a critical thinking assessment tool for
a major assignment in one of their courses
revise
a major course assignment so that it is consistent
with the critical thinking outcomes
use
the tool to assess students' work on the assignment
analyze
and interpret the results
use the assessment
results to modify the assignment for future semesters
In addition, participants participate in a 2-hour
long workshop that is conducted at the start of the
semester. As of May, 2008, more than 60 faculty members
have participated in this project and several have
participated multiple times. Summaries of each project
as well as the assignment and rubric used can be accessed
via the links below. (In most cases, project summary
information is taken directly from participants' final
reports.) A discussion of the general results of the
ACT I project can be found in Assessment
Brief #12.
