SURVEYS
Why use surveys?
Multiple types of data can be used to assess students’
learning and development. Surveys can provide an indirect
measure of student learning and development (i.e., a
measure that indirectly suggest a student has achieved
the outcome). While direct measures are always preferred,
they are not always practical. Surveys, when designed
and used appropriately, can provide valuable information
about student learning and development.
Does the Data Already Exist?
After you identify the type of data that you need, determine
whether you need to design your own survey or whether
Miami University's
Office of Institutional Research (IR) has survey
data that you can utilize.
Miami University’s IR Office conducts multiple
surveys of faculty, staff, and students each year, including
national surveys that allow comparisons with benchmark
institutions. Many surveys are designed to go hand-in-hand
with other surveys in order to provide multiple perspectives
(e.g., faculty and student perspectives). For some of
these surveys, the IR Office has data stretching back
as far as 1970!
How can I receive help in designing my survey?
If you are designing a survey for assessment purposes,
Assessment staff are available to help you with the
design. You can contact the Assessment Office at
513-529-7135 or assessment@muohio.edu.
If you are designing a survey for a Miami Plan course
(or for a full Miami Plan assessment), sample questionnaires
are available in the Miami
Plan Assessment portion
of the website.

Surveys Conducted by the Office of Institutional
Research
Below is a list of the major surveys conducted
by Miami University’s IR Office. Click on the
survey title to see a description of the survey, including
the Population (who was surveyed), the Topic
of the survey, the Years for which data are
available, and the Companion survey(s) (surveys
that were designed to complement the current survey).
Unless specified, all surveys provide comparisons between
Miami University and benchmark institutions. For additional
information on the surveys, including recent results
and survey instruments, visit the Office of Institutional
Research website at: http://www.units.muohio.edu/oir/
