Global Miami Plan - Foundation Courses |

Proposed Restructuring of the Foundation for The Global Miami Plan
12-4-2007
approved by LEC only for purposes of University-wide discussions
Important note: This proposal reduces by 3 credit hours the total liberal education requirements
for students studying abroad and keeps it the same for students who do not study abroad.
1. MPF I, IV and V remain the same.
2. Similar to the historical requirement and reminiscent of the old non-dominate perspective
requirement, students must select one MPF course that carries a “C” designation for US/World
Cultures. This is a “double-dip:” students receive credit for the MPF category the course is in as
well as C credit.
Criteria will be developed for C courses, but it is expected that they must include both a US culture
perspective as well as a World cultures perspective. Existing or new courses will be submitted to
LEC for review for C designation.
3. Modify MPF II and III as follows
a. MPF II include 3 credit hours in each of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Science;
b. MPF III has two options:
Option A (6 credit hours) – Student studies abroad on a Miami-approved program and
completes (and transfers to Miami) 6 credit hours of course work on the program.
Option B – (9 credit hours) – Student selects one or a combination of:
*9 credit hours of MPF courses designated as G-courses. No double counting
permitted; i.e. the G course chosen would not count in any other MPF category.
*9 credits hour of a foreign language. (For CAS students, the 9 hours must either
be in a different foreign language than the one for CAS or complete 9 additional
hours beyond the 202-level in the language they use for CAS requirement.)
LEC intends for Option B to eventually be phased out in an effort to encourage study abroad.
However, LEC also recognizes that, for a variety of reasons, some students cannot study abroad. In
this case, Option B alternatives to study abroad will be approved by petition. In other words,
eventually, the expectation is that all students will study abroad as a part of their liberal education,
while recognizing there will be petitionable exceptions.
4. Other initiatives to globalize the Miami Plan:
a. First Year Seminars that emphasize a global perspective now receive priority consideration.
Each seminar is an MPF course
b. In January a call for proposals will be sent to faculty to develop new Capstones that –
among other criteria - have either a global perspective or a diversity perspective.
c. LEC would like to have a thematic sequence developed that has these 3 courses: a prestudy
abroad course for preparation; a study abroad research experience; and a post-study
