Welcome to the Miami University Assessment Website!

Assessment at Miami University is designed around the idea of full-cycle assessment. Rather than viewing assessment as a one-time project to be completed, full-cycle assessment regards assessment as a continuous cycle, in which the information gathered is used to redesign courses and programs in order to enhance student learning and development.

This model of assessment is reflected in Miami University's fundamental philosophy of assessment, as defined by the Assessment Task Force Final Report (May, 2004):

The Miami assessment process is designed to gather useful information about students’ learning and development and to use this information to continuously revise and modify the curriculum and cocurriculum to further enhance student learning and developmental outcomes. The assessment process is built on a learning-centered culture and the commitment of faculty and staff who value efforts to continuously improve students’ education. Assessment is viewed as a seamless, collaborative process between Academic and Student Affairs that focuses on students holistically and involves the examination of the curriculum as well as the cocurriculum. (p. 1)

In line with this fundamental philosophy of assessment, this website provides a variety of useful resources for faculty and staff who are engaged in assessment and who are committed to continuously improving students' education. A brief description of the different areas of the website is provided below. We encourage you to explore the website, and to contact the assessment staff if you have questions or would like support for your assessment project(s).

Assessment Basics: The Assessment Basics section provides multiple sources of information that are useful for beginners and experts alike. This section includes:

Assessment Briefs: The Assessment Office regularly publishes one-page news briefs that highlight current assessment projects or provide information about how to conduct assessment projects. PDF files for all previously published briefs are available in this section of the website.

Assessment Luncheons: The Miami University Assessment Team is pleased to announce a series of monthly luncheons on assessment. These luncheons will provide useful information on how to design, conduct, and utilize the results of assessment. The luncheons are open to all faculty, staff, and TA’s at Miami University. Details on the topics, speakers, and dates are provided in this section.

Current Projects: This portion of the website contains information on a variety of assessment projects conducted by or with the assistance of the Assessment Office, including:

Miami Plan Assessment (Program Review): This portion of the website serves as a resource for departments and faculty who are developing Miami Plan assessments at the Foundation, Thematic Sequence, and Capstone levels. Included in this area are guidelines for conducting Miami Plan assessment, details on the report (e.g., format, due dates), a historical perspective on Miami Plan assessment, and samples of well-written assessment plans and reports.

Staff: Would you like to speak with somebody about assessment? The staff portion of the website provides contact information for the assessment office staff as well as information about the various assessment-related groups on campus.
