Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. Douglas Shumavon, Professor, Political Science
(ACT I, Spring, 2005)

Dr. Shumavon created several rubrics for use in his POL 466, Public Policy Analysis, and POL 406, Public Policy Analysis Laboratory, courses.  POL 466 is a capstone course for students majoring in public administration.  The capstone assignment is for students to work in teams of three to produce a policy report of approximately sixty pages.  This project is broken down into smaller parts such as problem definition and alternative analysis which are worked on in the laboratory part of the course.  Dr. Shumavon found that developing rubrics for several of these assignments caused him to articulate to the students criteria for assessing performance in a more rigorous format than he had done in the past.  Feedback from the students indicated that they appreciated the guidance on what he was looking for.
