312: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
Dr. Rodriguez-Gonalez focused on
redesigning the final project in her SPN 312 course.
For the final project students conducted a descriptive
analysis of the phonetic, phonological, morphological
and syntactic characteristics of a dialect of
Spanish.
Students selected and gathered examples of a
Spanish dialect, conducted a bibliographic search
and linguistic description of the dialect, and
analyzed the linguistic properties of the data
collected. Dr. Rodriguez-Gonzalez designed the
assignment so that students would be able to achieve
the following learning outcomes:
|
1. List all the linguistic characteristics
that are normally used by native speakers of the
geographical area you are analyzing.
2. Recognize, report and discuss the specific
characteristics that differentiate the people
in your interview/characters in your movie from
the steoreotype.
3. Analyze and interpret those specific characteristics
as part of a Hispanic geographical area.
4. Manage the data obtained in your research and
compare it with the linguistic properties found
in all Spanish dialects.
5. Evaluate the implications of your research
in other areas of study that are related to Spanish
dialectology (e.g., Sociolinguistics, language
planning).
