Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. Lisa Poirier, Assistant Professor, Department of Comparative Religion
(ACT I, Spring, 2005)

Dr. Poirier used a modified version of the WSU rubric to grade a major paper in her REL 360U, Native American Religions, course.  She also developed a rubric based on the grading rubric for students to use as they composed peer reviews of each others’ rough drafts.  She found that her students particularly needed guidance in identifying their own assumptions and those of the sources they employ and in the articulation of compelling conclusions.  She plans to develop assignments that will focus specifically on those two skills.  Dr. Poirier will continue to use assessments to help her identify areas in which students may need the most assistance.
