Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. Jeff Merhout, Assistant Professor, Department of Decision Sciences and Management Information Systems
(ACT I, Spring, 2005)

Dr. Merhout used a modified version of the WSU critical thinking rubric to assess a major project in his MIS 385, Applications of Electronic Commerce Technology, course.  In this group project, students were required to analyze a simulated business scenario,  apply course concepts to the development of an integrated electronic commerce business strategy, and design and prototype and EC system.  Dr. Merhout used all of the WSU categories except the one related to evidence and added four additional categories for the other aspects of the project that he wanted to grade.  He found that “while critical thinking is very important, it cannot be the end in of itself; rather it has to be the means to an end of learning the major course content and how to apply those concepts to specific scenarios.”
