Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. John M. Jeep, Associate Professor, German, Russian, and East Asian Languages
(ACT I, Spring, 2005)

Dr. Jeep, worked with students in his GER 309, Introducton to Linguistics, class.  While he has always included some discussion of critical thinking in the course, as a result of this project he initiated more formal discussions of the components of critical thinking at various points in the semester.  He adapted Susan Wolcott’s Steps for Better Thinking Rubric (http://www.WolcottLynch.com) for use in his course. At the end of the semester he had students reflect on their semester project and self-evaluate using the rubric.
