Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Project Description

The Assessing Critical Thinking project (ACT) is now in its fourth round of faculty projects. The ACT project was created to assist faculty in, 1) designing and modifying assignments to encourage students' development of critical thinking skills, and 2) assessing students' critical thinking skills.

Participants work in teams of 3-4 (led by an Assessment Fellow) to:

• adapt for their own course a critical thinking assessment tool used by the Assessment Fellows;
• revise at least one major course assignment to clearly identify expected student learning outcomes consistent with the revised critical thinking assessment tool;
• use the revised assessment tool to assess student work submitted for the assignment(s);
• use the assessment results to identify plans for implementing course or assignment changes the next time they teach the course.

In addition, participants participate in a 2-hour long workshop that is conducted at the start of the semester. As of December, 2006, more than 50 faculty members have participated in this project and several have participated multiple times. Summaries of each project as well as the assignment and rubric used can be accessed via the links below. (In most cases, project summary information is taken directly from participants' final reports.) A discussion of the general results of the ACT I project can be found in Assessment Brief #12.
