Dr. Michele Dickey, Associate Professor, Educational
Psychology/Interactive Media Studies
(ACT III, Spring, 2007)
IMS 445:
Game Design
Students worked in teams to produce
a short game design treatment. Many game genres
require/foster critical thinking skills. For this
assignment, students needed to assess various
game engines and platforms. This assessment required
students to analyze the affordances and constraints
of various platforms.
All of the students performed well in this assignment.
Although each student submitted individual work,
students met in small groups outside of class
to analyze aspects of affordances and constraints.
Students considered this to be a resourceful strategy.
Students also identified resources which helped
inform their treatment. Resources included web
sites, reference manuals, and first hand experiences
with many tools. Many students went beyond the
scope of this assignment by finding freeware and
shareware tools.
Dr. Dickey found that the students demonstrated
strong critical thinking skills on this project.
However, students' creative thinking
skills were weaker than desired.
