Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. Enamul Choudhury, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science
(ACT I, Spring, 2005)

Dr, Choudhury created a rubric to assess critical thinking in a final paper in his POL 261, Introduction to Public Administration, course.  In the process of developing the rubric he also improved the design of the assignment.  At mid-semester he provided the rubric to the class and had the students use it to do peer reviews of one another’s draft papers.  He used the rubric as part of his grading process for the final papers.  Dr Choudhury reported, “Students found the requirements of the assignment much clearer and within their control.”  Also, he was able to give them very specific feedback on areas where they are strong and weak.
