Assessing Critical Thinking (ACT) Project

Dr. Zachary Birchmeier, Visiting Assistant Professor, Psychology
(ACT III, Spring, 2007)

PSY 410: Capstone in Social Psychology (Computer-Supported Social Interaction)

PSY 420: Seminar in Social Psychology (Computer-Supported Social Interaction)

In both courses, each student produced a website that discussed research on a topic of their choice within the focus of the course. Students also formed common-interest groups of 3-4 and produced a collaborative research proposal.

Dr. Birchmeier assessed the quality of the critical thinking that was demonstrated in the websites and proposals using rubrics that he designed as part of the ACT III program.

Dr. Birchmeier's assessment results indicated that senior psychology majors demonstrated moderately developed levels of critical thinking in reviewing existing literature and in designing empirical investigations. However, the critical thinking skills demonstrated in their methodology was generally underdeveloped.
