UNDERGRADUATE MAJORS LEARNING
OUTCOMES
Outcomes
in the Majors Project
As the result of recommendations made by the Assessment
Task Force in 2004, Miami University created a project
called the "Outcomes in the Majors" (OIM)
project. The main goal of the project is to further
improve student learning in the major. For this project,
departments examine what their majors are expected to
learn, gather information about this learning, and use
the results to modify the curriculum and/or courses
to further improve student learning.
Provided below is a list of all departments that are
currently involved in the Outcomes in the Majors project
as well as the student learning outcomes that are the
current focus of assessment for the department. Many
departments are in the process of identifying or have
already identified additional learning outcomes that
they will assess at a later point in time.
Botany: 1) Students will engage in
critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
Chemistry: 1) Students will engage
in critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
Communication: Communication's
current focus is on students' ability to engage in critical
thinking. Additional learning outcomes include students'
demonstration of, 1) creative thinking and problem solving,
2) curiosity, 3) perpetual learning, 4) perspective,
5) emotional intelligence, 6) citizenship, 7) teamwork
skills, 8) leadership skills, and 9) ethics.
Engineering and Applied Science: 1)
Students will engage in critical thinking; 2) Students
will engage in scientific inquiry, including collecting,
analyzing, and reflecting upon data.
Geology: 1) Students will engage in
critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
Geography: 1) Students will be able
to design and implement an effective geographic research
project; 2) Students will be able to conceptualize significant
geographic relationships and contexts, including a)
the role scale in geographic phenomena, and b) interactions
among multiple aspects of a geographical setting.
Microbiology: 1) Students will engage
in critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
Physics: 1) Students will engage in
critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
Political Science: 1) Students will
demonstrate critical thinking skills; 2) Students will
demonstrate research skills appropriate to the discipline
of political science; 3) Given a problem, issue, or
political question, students will demonstrate the ability
to identify access points for further study, reflection,
and political participation.
Psychology: Students will be able
to design and carry out a psychology research project.
Sociology/Gerontology: 1) Students
will understand the roles of quantitative and qualitative
methods in sociology; 2) Students will be able to engage
in critical thinking and to recognize critical thinking
in others; 3) Students will understand the effects of
social inequities; 4) Students will understand the social
construction of the life course.
Zoology: 1) Students will engage in
critical thinking; 2) Students will engage in scientific
inquiry, including collecting, analyzing, and reflecting
upon data.
