INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
About the Journalism internship program
By taking advantage of internship opportunities in broadcast, web and print journalism, Miami University students add valuable professional experience to their program of study as Journalism majors. Faculty advisers can assist students in finding semester-long or summer internships with newspapers, magazines, media websites, radio and TV stations, trade publications and cable companies.
Miami students recently have interned with national broadcast news organizations like ABC, NBC, ESPN and CNN, as well as local radio and television stations in Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Atlanta, New York and elsewhere.
Our students regularly work as interns at newspapers and web media across Ohio, including the Akron Beacon Journal, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Columbus Dispatch, Cincinnati Enquirer, Citybeat and Dayton Daily News. Closer to home, students regularly work for the Oxford Press, Hamilton Journal-News, Middletown Journal and Richmond (Ind.) Palladium-Item.
Outside of Ohio, students have worked at the Chicago Tribune, Louisville Courier-Journal and the Associated Press, among other places.
Among the magazines that have used Miami interns are Rolling Stone, Elle, W, Cincinnati, Cincy Business, Ohio, Indianapolis and Columbus Monthly.
Interns also have gained experience in new media with the online editions of many of the above media.
Lecturer Patti Gallagher Newberry coordinates the print journalism opportunities for students. She can be reached at 513-529-5893 or Patti Gallagher Newberry. She sponsors students for both in-semester and summer internships for credit as JRN 419 and/or for pay. She also oversees on-campus recruiting visits from area news organizations.
The Mass Communication internship program offers credit experiences under COM 340. To be eligible, students must have completed their sophomore year, attained a 2.75 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 in their major, and have relevant course work and applied experience in the area in which they want to intern. Students receive one credit hour for every 50 hours of work at their internship.
Professor Howard Kleiman coordinates broadcast internships, also offered in-semester or during summers. He can be reached at 529-3545 or kleimah@muohio.edu.
