Miami University

Journalism students at Miami University get myriad opportunities to expand on their classroom learning. The program itself sponsors 20 or more students each semester as interns with area media. On campus, students can hone their skills at student-run media such as The Miami Student and radio station WMSR, and at the Miami University-based National Public Radio affiliate, WMUB. Miami's Washington, D.C. semester and summer programs allow students to explore the link between politics and media. Campus chapters of such groups as the Society of Professional Journalists and Lambda Phi Eta provide excellent networking and skill-building assistance. Students are strongly encouraged to get involved in one or more of these opportunities to enhance their Miami learning.

MIAMI JOURNALISM OPPORTUNITIES

Miami students interning in Washington, D.C.

Don't miss the summer experience of a lifetime studying and interning on Capitol Hill. Journalism, Political Science and Communication Majors are eligible for the Inside Washington Program for Summer 2009. For information, contact Journalism Professor Patti Newberry or visit the Inside Washington website.

Real-World Capstone Experiences

Three Journalism Capstone courses in spring 2008 combined intensive classroom learning with internship experiences. Students studied business journalism and interned at the Cincinnati Business Courier, studied in-depth reporting and interned at Cox Ohio newspapers and got intensive radio news coursework and intern experience at WMUB radio in Oxford. The WMUB Capstone is being repeated in spring 2009.

Class Projects Enhance Local Media

Miami University Journalism students delivered two Election 2008-related multi-media projects to area media in November. The Online Journalism class and Reporting on Politics class together produced a multi-media election site for the Richmond, Ind., Palladium-Item and Miami Student newspapers that explored issues like voter registration trends and the higher profile religion is playing in voting. Two sections of News Reporting and Writing I produced a multi-media website for The Miami Student that profiled voters across Oxford.
