The resources in this page are only a sampling of the international work, internship and volunteering opportunities that are available to students. For more information, contact the Office of International Education or the Office of Career Services.
Work, Internships and Volunteering Abroad Websites
These are general resources for finding work, internship or volunteering programs abroad. Some are commercial sites and others are sponsored by international offices that focus on experiential learning. Their resources are much more extensive than those presented here.
Internship Resources
- Miami University Office of Career Services
A valuable resource for your internship search, catering specifically to Miami University students.
- AIESEC
A student-run international internship (traineeship) exchange organization with a presence in over 90 countries. Offers internships in fields including business, education, development and technology.
- CDS International
A German-based organization that offers internships in Argentina and Spain in addition to opportunities in Germany.
- U.S. Department of State
Opportunities for students in a wide variety of majors to work in support of diplomacy in domestic or international locations. You must return to school for at least a semester following the internship.
Short-Term Work Abroad Resources
To work in a foreign country, you may need a work permit or special visa type. These organizations can assist you in securing a work permit or a short-term job abroad.
- Association for International Practical Training
The Pre-arranged Training Program can assist you in getting a work permit if you have already secured a job or internship in another country.
- BUNAC
Offers work permits to American students and young people to work in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
- CDS International
A German-based organization that offers opportunities for short-term work assignments in Germany and Switzerland.
Teaching Abroad Resources
- American-Scandinavian Foundation
The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers teaching assistantships in Finland. Teaching experience is not required, although priority will be given to those who do have experience.
- CIEE Teach Abroad
CIEE offers teaching positions in China, Thailand, Spain and Chile.
- Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the USA
7- or 9-month appointments as English teaching assistants in all levels of the French educational system, from elementary to teachers' college. No teaching experience is required, but assistants must speak proficient French. (MU Study Abroad Counselor Sarah McNitt was a participant in this program – ask for more information.)
- Fulbright Teaching Assistantships
Teaching assistantship positions are available in a wide variety of countries through this program. See the website above for the current list of countries that have open positions.
- Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program

Allows recent college graduates with no prior teaching experience or knowledge of Japanese to teach English in Japan. Additional opportunities are available for students who have teaching experience or speak Japanese.
Volunteering Abroad Resources
- Cross-Cultural Solutions
Volunteer trips of varying lengths, which can begin or end at any time of the year (not just based on a semester calender).
- Idealist.org
Listings of volunteer organizations with international opportunities.
- U.S. Peace Corps
The Peace Corps represents a 27-month commitment to live and work in a developing country, working in areas such as education, youth outreach, and community development; health and HIV/AIDS; agriculture and environment; business development; and information technology. (Service with the Peace Corps can result in advantages for employment by the federal government as well as deferment of student loans for the extent of your time in the Peace Corps.)
