Study Abroad Scholarships

Many scholarship applications are available online for your convenience. In order to give yourself the best advantage, we strongly recommend that you consult with your academic advisers and study abroad adviser for assistance in completing the forms, especially with the personal statements and appropriate budget information.
AIEJ Short-Term Exchange Scholarship
Available to Miami students who have been accepted into exchange programs with Kansai Gaidai University, Japan. Sponsored by the Japanese government. Contact the Office of International Education for information.
Lifelong Learning Faculty-led International Workshop Award
Sixteen $500 awards for use on a Miami Study Abroad Credit Workshop. Available only to currently enrolled Miami students. Contact the Office of Lifelong Learning for applications and deadline. Typically late January or early February.
Havighurst International Minority Scholarship
Need-based amounts available to students of Native American, African-American, Hispanic-American and Asian-American ethnicity for use on any Miami University sponsored program. Available only to currently enrolled Miami undergraduate students. Contact the Office of International Education for applications. Deadline: Monday following Spring Break.

Karen Ostberg Award
Maximum $500 available to undergraduate students participating in Miami programs outside of Luxembourg. Available only to currently enrolled Miami undergraduate students. Contact the Office of International Education for information. Deadline: Monday following Spring Break.

Study Abroad Airfare Grant
Miami students with demonstrated need are eligible for up to $600 in the form of an airfare grant and may receive the remainder of the ticket price in the form of an interest-free university loan. For semester- or year-long study abroad programs, beginning in Fall 2007. Contact Office of Student Financial Assistance for information.

Varying amounts to be applied to selected semester and academic year MU programs and other study abroad programs whose transfer credit is accepted by Miami University. Boren Scholarships/Fellowships (NSEP)
Funding for undergraduate and graduate study abroad (with foreign language study as an integral part of the program) in countries not including Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. BUNAC Work Abroad Program
Allows U.S. full-time students to work in the United Kingdom and Australia legally for a maximum of six months. Now also available to students while participating on a study abroad program in the UK.

BUTEX North American Scholarships
Open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada.To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association) for the academic year 2008/09. The approximate value of each scholarship is US$1000 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.

Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
Applies only to designated summer institutes (see website). U.S. Government-sponsored scholarships for students wishing to study critical languages (including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean and Russian) at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners during the summer. All program costs are covered by this scholarship.

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)(German Academic Exchange Service)
- Prizes for stays of two to three months in conjunction with independent senior thesis research, participation in a language or summer course at a German university, or an internship/practicum at a German institution or corporation.
- Scholarships for a semester or year abroad. All academic fields are eligible.
- RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) pairs advanced doctoral students in Germany with students.
- Summer (3 month) opportunities in Germany for undergraduate scientists and engineers - Serious research opportunities abroad for undergraduate students from the US and Canada in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering for up to three months in the summer. Students gain practical experience in their field and are integrated immediately into an ongoing research project. There is no language requirement and all participants receive as a stipend from DAAD as well as housing assistance from the university or research institution.

Freeman Award for Study in Asia
Available to students participating in programs in East and Southeast Asia. Programs must be at least 8 weeks long and include at least 20 hours of class time per week. Students should participate in the study of an East Asian language, culture and history and should demonstrate a sincere interest in incorporating East Asian Studies into future academic and/or professional plans. Deadline for summer: early March. Deadline for fall: early April.

Gilman International Scholarship
U.S. State Department-sponsored program for undergraduate study abroad through any program for which Miami will accept transfer credit. Applicants must currently be receiving Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans or Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Program must be longer than 4 weeks. Scholarships in the range of $5,000 for undergraduate study abroad programs which Miami will accept credit. Programs must have some business components and must take place in the summer or fall. Awards of $1,000, available to students with 3.5+ GPA who have earned 30 to 90 credit hours, and are participating in an academic program at an accredited international university during the study abroad period.
