3) Program Updates

  • We are all out of CIEE Europe catalogues, and they will not be reprinting until this summer!  So if you're interested in learning more about a CIEE program in Europe, please check the website:  http://ciee.org/study/study_europe.aspx
  • CIEE programs are filling up for fall 2008 in Dakar, Prague, Amman, and the summer 2008 program in Community Health in the Dominican Republic.  If you're interested in one of these programs, please submit your application as soon as possible.  http://ciee.org/study/apply.aspx
  • Program fees for the fall 2008 CEA program in Madrid are reduced by up to $1000.  If you're applying for CEA Madrid, contact CEA to find out how to qualify for this discount.  http://www.gowithcea.com
  • If you want to apply for financial aid for a fall 2008 IES program, the deadline is May 1.  They are also offering a new Diversity scholarship.  http://www.iesabroad.org
  • ISA has announced that they will be offering new Diversity scholarships beginning for study in fall 2008.  http://www.studiesabroad.com/admissions/document/scholarships

4) Can Studying Abroad Make You a Global Citizen?

"American students who travel abroad cannot be expected to transcend historical, political, social, and global systems of power in order to become cross-culturally immersed "global citizens." We can, however, be asked to become internationally conscious and self-aware American citizens who are responsible for thinking about those critical issues."

When you're traveling or studying abroad, you carry a certain amount of cultural baggage with you.  In this article from The Chronicle for Higher Education, a returned study abroad student looks at the cultural expectations and comforts that may affect your study abroad experience:  http://chronicle.com/temp/email2.php?id=BjjJgF2WwpjkqgSzVGQHsrXpZkhqF9Zx

5) Royal Holloway Applications Due

Applications for Royal Holloway for fall 2008, academic year 2008 and spring 2009 should be turned in by Friday, April 4.  We will continue to accept applications after that date, but if your application is not completed by April 4, it may be delayed in being sent to Royal Holloway, which could affect course availability.  Don't forget the supporting materials:  recommendations, transcript and disciplinary forms.  Sometimes these supporting materials take longer to collect or to have processed, so if you haven't already requested them, please do so IMMEDIATELY!  All application materials should be sent to the Office of International Education and not to Royal Holloway.  Further program information is available here:  http://www.units.muohio.edu/internationalprograms/royalholloway.php

6) China Semester - Still Accepting Applications

If you are still interested in applying for the China Semester for fall 2008, please turn your applications in as soon as possible to Sarah McNitt (mcnittsa@muohio.edu) in the Office of International Education.  More information and application materials can be found here:  http://www.units.muohio.edu/internationalprograms/chinasemester.php

7) Featured Study Abroad Location of the Month: The French Overseas Departments

Many students of French look to Europe to continue and enrich their language study:  to France, Luxembourg, Belgium or Switzerland.  Fewer students consider the options for studying French in France's Overseas Departments in Africa, South America and the Caribbean.  These departments, La Réunion, French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe, are administratively part of France, while not being physically attached to the rest of the country, like the French equivalent to Alaska and Hawaii.  And like our non-contiguous states, they offer experiences quite unlike those of the mainland, heavily influenced by their native cultures and their foreign neighbors as well as the colonial influence of France.

Miami students have access to universities within the Overseas Departments through the ISEP Exchange, and all four locations offer an excellent chance of placement.  All courses are taught in French alongside local students, giving you opportunities for both language and cultural immersion.
