If you will be studying abroad for fall 2007 or academic year 2007-08, please turn your forms in to Miami before the end of the semester! You can turn them in throughout the summer (mailing address and fax number can be found here: http://www.muohio.edu/international/about.php#contact), but it is usually easier to do while you are still on campus. The necessary forms are all listed on the Steps to Studying Abroad checklist. If you don’t have one already, you can download our Steps to Studying Abroad checklist and the Study Abroad Declaration Form here:
4) Ultimate World Traveler Intern: Rachel Rudwall
The student-travel agency STA Travel (http://www.statravel.com/) is hosting an Ultimate World Traveler Internship starting this summer, and a Miami University student has been chosen as the first participant. Rachel Rudwall will be posting videos, photographs and travel journal entries as she tours the world from June to August. In her own words:
I write from my semester in St. Andrews, Scotland with some very exciting news. I have just been selected by STA Travel -- the world's largest youth and student travel company with over 6 million customers and offices in over 90 countries -- to be their first-ever Ultimate World Traveler Intern. This June-August I will be their face, voice, and words from abroad.
My job is simple: to inspire other youths to travel the world. Thus, the job requirements are that I travel journal/blog, post videos of my adventures and the people I meet, and upload photographs from the road.
At the beginning of June, I head to Europe for 4 weeks (England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Holy See, France, Monaco, Spain), to white water raft in Austria, sip wine in the French Riviera, appreciate Van Gogh in Amsterdam, and mountain bike through the Swiss Alps. Then it's on to 2 weeks in China, where I will be working with endangered species (including TEN Giant Pandas, of which there are only 1000 in existence) and teaching English to conservationists in the Qingling mountains. After that I head to Thailand for 1 week, where I will visit Chiang Mai, then hill trek with the tribes of Thailand, and finish up by riding an elephant back in the direction of Bangkok. Following the Thai leg of the trip, I venture onward to Australia, where I will spend 2 weeks out of doors, riding 4x4's, exploring caves by candlelight, and riding the waves above the Great Barrier Reef on catamarans. The last week of the journey will be spent in Costa Rica, where I will surf, zipline through the rainforest, and relax!
Follow this link to check out my itinerary: http://www.statravel.com/cps/rde/xchg/us_division_web_live/hs.xsl/World-Traveler-Intern.htm. And follow this link sometime next week to see my application video and stay posted this summer: http://www.statravel193.com.
Hopefully I can count on you to visit the website and watch me as I roam for the 11 weeks or so that I'm on the road. And if at all possible, please spread the word! The nature of this journey is not just exploration, but also the sharing of knowledge and experience. So, as you watch me this summer, let others know, too. Maybe -- just maybe – it will inspire them to hit the road.
You can follow Rachel’s adventures all summer at http://www.statravel193.com.
5) Featured Study Abroad Program of the Month
Miami has entered into a consortium with several other Ohio public universities to allow for study abroad program sharing. Two of the most visible and most popular of these programs are Kent State’s Florence (Italy) Semester and Geneva (Switzerland) Semester programs. In Florence, students can focus on Italian culture and language or can take a special program designed for majors in Architecture or Interior Design. The Geneva Semester is designed with Business and Political Science majors in mind and includes optional internships.
In addition to the appealing course offerings and locations, these programs are attractive to many Miami students because they are Co-Sponsored programs (http://www.muohio.edu/international/cosponsored.php), which means that – in addition to the federal financial aid which can be applied to any program for which Miami accepts transfer credit - your Miami scholarships (except Ohio Leader and Ohio Resident scholarships) can be applied to the program.
