2) Application Deadlines and Scholarships
- IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN STUDYING ABROAD IN SUMMER 2007 OR FALL 2007, NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY. Remember: Most study abroad programs operate on a rolling admissions basis, so there is a chance that they could fill up even before their stated deadline! If you are concerned about the admissions timeline of your chosen study abroad program, please contact them to ask if you should rush your application.
- March 1 – 2nd round application deadline for Luxembourg (MUDEC) program, fall/spring 2007-08. See http://www.muohio.edu/luxembourg
- March 15 – Deadline to file FAFSA for financial aid. See http://www.muohio.edu/sfa/apply.htm
- March 16 – A $600 scholarship is available to any eligible student who submits a complete fall 2007 application for the new ISEP-Direct program to Peking University in Beijing before March 16th. (Please note that this is ISEP-Direct rather than ISEP exchange, so your Miami scholarships do not apply.) See http://www.isep.org/Students/Directory/member_site.asp?CSID=66&ID=317
- March 19 – Deadline to apply for many Miami study abroad scholarships, including the Study Abroad Fund and the Havighurst International Minority Scholarship. For more information or for applications, see: http://www.muohio.edu/international/scholarships.php
3) Program Updates
- Middlesex University in London, England, recently announced a change in the university's courses. Beginning fall 2007, all undergraduate courses will move to a yearlong schedule. As a result, semester study abroad students will no longer have access to the university's full curriculum. A smaller selection of semester-only courses will be offered to accommodate study abroad students. To see a listing of these courses, visit: http://www.mdx.ac.uk/studyabroad/coursedir.asp. If you were considering Middlesex University and the courses no longer meet your needs, please talk to a study abroad adviser or visit http://www.muohio.edu/international/sa-uk.php to look for other programs in the UK.
- Starting in fall 2007, AustraLearn will be launching a new program in Asia-Pacific Studies where students spend a semester at Queensland University of Technology followed by a month-long field study tour on the Pacific island of Niue. For more information, see http://www.australearn.org/Asia-Pacific
4) Political Science and Diplomacy/Foreign Affairs Abroad
The Political Science department now has its own departmental study abroad adviser to help majors and minors through their study abroad program selection process. They have also assembled a list of recommended programs for Political Science and Diplomacy/Foreign Affairs students. If you'd like to know which programs the department recommends, please see Dilchoda Berdieva (berdiedn@muohio.edu).
5) Meet our Student Workers
Did you know that we have returned students in our office who can help walk you through the process of finding, applying and getting courses approved for a study abroad program, as well as give you advice about studying abroad and traveling? They love to talk about their own study abroad experiences, but can help students from any major and with interest in any country. A student worker is on hand in the Study Abroad Resource Library (225 MacMillan) most of the time between 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.
- Allison is an Anthropology major and just returned from studying at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand through AustraLearn.
- Dave is a Finance major and Spanish minor who studied last year at the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina through CEA.
- Greg is a Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs major and Middle East and Islamic Studies minor who studied abroad in Oman through the School for International Training (SIT).
- Kristin is a Chemistry major and Management minor who studied at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia through Study Australia.
Our student workers are very helpful with any questions you may have, but if you're interested in talking to a returned student about their experiences in a country not listed here, we also have a list of students from more than 30 other countries who have volunteered to be contacted by email. Start asking questions!
6) Royal Holloway Note
Students interested in studying at Royal Holloway, University of London in Spring 2008 are encouraged to apply by March 31, 2007 to ensure that enrollment spots are available. Course selection at RHUL is done on a yearly basis rather than a semester basis, so if you wait to apply until next fall, you may not have as wide a range of courses to choose from. Please contact Sarah McNitt (mcnittsa@muohio.edu) with any questions. For more information on Royal Holloway, please see http://www.muohio.edu/international/royalholloway.php
7) What Are You Doing After Graduation?
One option is to look into short-term work or volunteer projects abroad. Some students will work for up to 6 months in another country, while others may spend an academic year teaching English. For more information on non-credit overseas alternatives, see http://www.muohio.edu/international/wiva.php
8) Featured Study Abroad Program of the Month
As of 2005, 30.7% of the foreign-born population of the U.S. came from Mexico. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans account for a large portion of the growing Latino population in the United States. Business students will need to be aware of the market demands of this changing demographic. Education majors should be familiar with the customs and the language of students of Mexican descent. What better way to prepare for a life and career in this changing environment than to get a first-hand experience with Mexico and Mexican culture?
Miami has an exchange agreement with Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Our exchange offers students access to UDLA's entire Spanish curriculum as well as a range of courses offered in English, including Business, Engineering and Social Science subjects. Two years of college-level Spanish are required for this program.
