  • Butler University has just announced that it will begin offering a program at Cardiff University in Wales in fall 2007.  See www.ifsa-butler.org/programs/wales
  • The University of Limerick (Ireland) has changed its academic calendar to more closely resemble those of American universities, and will now be operating on a semester basis, which will make it easier for US study abroad students to attend.  Limerick is noted as a particularly strong program for students interested in Biological Sciences, Sports/Exercise Science and Engineering, and is accessible through many of our providers, including API, AIFS, Arcadia and Butler.  See www.muohio.edu/international/sa-ie.php
  • CEA has a new program in Shanghai, China beginning summer 2007.  See www.gowithcea.com/programs/china/shanghai.html
  • IES has two new summer programs:  Health Studies in Santiago, Chile and the European Union Program.  See www.iesabroad.org
  • Arcadia has several new summer programs:  Community Development/Tutoring in Cape Town, South Africa, Scottish Universities International Summer School in Edinburgh, Scotland (focuses on literature and creative writing), a new course called Byzantium:  Images of a Holy Empire added to their program in Greece and three tracks available in China through the Alliance for Global Education.  See www.arcadia.edu/CEA/index.aspx?id=1799

4) Course Selection and Study Abroad

As you start to think about the classes you'll be taking next semester, take into account your study abroad plans. In certain majors, it may be advisable to save up a few Miami Plan requirements (such as World Cultures, Humanities or Social Science) for your study abroad program, or you might want to think about completing a self-designed Thematic Sequence while you're abroad. Have you talked to an academic adviser in your major department about when you should study abroad, or whether you should focus on your major or on other electives while abroad? If not, try to meet with them sometime soon, before the semester picks up and before they're in high demand!

5) Study Hindi or Korean!

As you may know, Miami will be introducing Korean and Hindi language classes starting in fall 2007. If you're planning on studying either of these languages here on campus, you can also get cultural experience and language immersion while studying abroad in Korea or India! See www.muohio.edu/international/sa-kr.php for programs in Korea or www.muohio.edu/international/sa-in.php for programs in India.

6) Focus on Internships

When you begin your job search in the second half of your college career, it may be useful to have some relevant work experience in your field of interest in the form of an internship. Many study abroad providers offer study-internships, where you take classes and complete an internship at the same time. It is up to each department to decide whether they will accept an internship as credit toward your graduation requirements, so talk to your academic adviser if you're considering this option! If you're interested in doing a professional internship for the experience rather than for academic credit, please contact the Office of Career Services. They have many great resources on internships at home and abroad and will be holding their Spring Internship & Career Expo (Spring ICE) on February 20. See www.muohio.edu/careers/students/internships for more information.

7) Featured Study Abroad Program of the Month

India is emerging as one of the most important powers in Asia, with thriving technology and industry. It is also a fascinating place to study ancient cultures, Eastern religions, politics or history. Christ College in Bangalore, India offers study abroad students access to their full curriculum of study, focusing particularly on Business, Information Technology and East Indian Studies. You can apply most Miami scholarships to this USAC program by applying through Wright State University. For more information on how to do this, contact Study Abroad Counselor Sarah McNitt at mcnittsa@muohio.edu.
