Visas & Visa Documents
At the time of your admission, Miami University will send you the SEVIS Form I-20 (for F-1 visa) or a SEVIS DS-2019 (for J-1 visa), whichever is appropriate. These forms outline the terms of your admission; you will need them when you apply for a visa to the United States. You will receive instructions on obtaining a visa when you receive your visa document.
SEVIS Fee - Before you go to your visa interview, you must pay the $100 SEVIS fee. For more information go to: SEVIS Fee information
For more information about applying for an F visa, go to: http://travel.state.gov/visa/tempvisitors_types_students2.html
For more information about applying for a J visa, go to: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1267.html
Note: You must have the Form I-20 or the DS-2019 in your possession when you arrive in this country or you may be denied admission to the U.S. at your port of entry.
The International Student and Scholar Adviser at Miami will prepare either the Form I-20 or the Form DS-2019 (Exchange Visitor Program) upon notification that you have been admitted. Only those students who receive full financial support from the university or from the U.S. or a foreign government are eligible to receive a DS-2019. All other admitted students will receive the Form I-20.
You should understand that if Miami University issues the Form I-20 or DS-2019 that you use to apply for your visa, you must attend Miami University after you arrive in the United States.
Those in H-1, TN, L-1, E-1, etc. may only attend school part time.
Those who hold other types of visas (i.e. L-2, E-2, H-4, TD) can go to school full-time, but can not be employed.
Those who hold B-1, B-2 or F-2 visas cannot go to school full or part time until their status has been changed to F-1 student.
