Social Security

In order to apply for your social security number, you first need to have a job on campus. This may be an assistantship for graduate students or a variety of other jobs on campus including office workers, dining hall workers, tutors, etc.

If you are interested in obtaining a job, you may:

  1. Go to www.miamistudentjobs.com for a listing of student positions;
  2. See the manager in the department where you wish to work;
  3. Visit the Financial Aid office in the Campus Avenue Building (CAB) to see the "job board" - a posting of available positions on campus.

When you have obtained a job, have your manager fill out a Student Employment form (which can be picked up at the Student Employment Office in Roudebush Hall, 15) with your name, your position, and where you will be working, or if you have a Graduate Assistantship, you can use your Graduate Assistantship offer letter. Take your Student Employment form or Graduate Assistantship offer letter to 216 MacMillan Hall and we will use it to complete a letter of enrollment and employment approval for the Social Security Office.

You will need to have the following items to complete the application process:

  • Letter from manager
  • Letter from OIE
  • Your immigration documents (passport, visa, I‐94 card, and I‐20)
  • A completed Social Security application, can be found at http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf to fill out and print or we have them available in 216 MacMillan

You will need to apply for your social security number at the Social Security office, which is located in Hamilton, OH about 40 minutes away from campus (6553 Winford Ave., Hamilton, OH 45011).
