Housing During Break Periods

All residence halls close for Thanksgiving Break (late November), Winter Break (December-January), and Spring Break (mid-March). Those living on campus must make other housing arrangements for these break periods. Here are some options:

  • Your best option is to make travel plans. Ask friends if they are interested in visiting a major city like Chicago or New York. You may have friends or family in other cities and this would be a great time for a short visit. Whatever your travel plans, if you plan to fly, arrange your flights early. That way, your ticket will cost less and you can make a reservation on the Miami airport shuttle to one of four major airports. Check with the Shriver Ticket Box Office in Shriver Center for airport transportation options before booking your flights.
  • If you have made friends at Miami and feel comfortable asking, let them know you have no plans and perhaps your friend may invite you to their home for the break.
  • Outdoor Pursuit: The Outdoor Pursuit Center is a Miami program committed to providing enjoyable, challenging, and affordable experiences that allow individuals and groups to learn the skills necessary to safely enjoy the outdoors. Trips are often scheduled over University breaks. Go to: http://www.units.muohio.edu/rsp/recsports/outdoorpursuit/domestictrips.html.
  • Your on-campus option is to stay in the one open residence hall. Although all residence halls are closed, one residence hall stays open for those who cannot travel home for the holiday. For $17.50 per night, you can stay in the overflow housing in Havighurst Hall. In the lower level, the space is divided into three sections: one large room of bunk beds for girls, one large room of bunk beds for boys, and a large living area with television and kitchenette. For this option, you would need to notify your residence hall director (not your RA, but the one in charge of the whole hall) who would then make arrangements for you to stay in the overflow housing in Havighurst. You would pack for five days and be there with other students. There would be no
dining options and no bus, so you would need to walk to Kroger or uptown Oxford to eat.

The following additional options are for Winter Break only:

  • Candlewood Apartments may be able to offer furnished apartments for a one-month lease at a rate between $300-$350 for the one month. You can contact Suzanne Kostic, the owner, at 523-6004 to check out this option.
  • Christmas International House is a Christian-based two-week homestay or groupstay. If this idea interests you, go online to www.ChristmasIH.org to read more about it and/or email amis@peachtreepres.org. For about $90 and the cost of your travel ticket, you can experience the Christmas holiday in an American setting. You choose from the locations offered and can be placed with friends to experience area tours, dinners, discussions, and holiday traditions. Go online for an application and further information.
