Health Insurance Requirement

F-1 Students and F-2 Dependents

Miami University requires that all international students and dependents holding "F" visa status have adequate insurance coverage for health and accident, and repatriation and emergency medical evacuation, for the entire period of study from the first day of enrollment until final departure from the university. Annual insurance coverage can be purchased through the University Bursar's Office. Persons who do not wish to be automatically billed for Miami's insurance plan and who have comparable policies purchased separately must submit a Request for Exemption and show written proof of coverage to Wynona Little, Office of International Education, no later than 2 weeks after classes begin. This must be done every August! For the waiver process, click here(pdf).

If you would like to look at policies through other insurance companies, see our Insurance Handout(pdf). To compare insurance companies and their policies, see our Insurance Comparison Chart(pdf).

See J-1 Exchange Visitors: Health insurance requirement.

Other Visa Types (H, L, E, B1/B2, TN, TD, etc.)

The University strongly advises all international students (with visa types other than "F" or "J") to purchase insurance for health/accident and repatriation and emergency medical evacuation. It is very important that you do this because of the high cost of medical care in this country.
