Payment of fees and expenses

The fees and expenses listed above are for the school year. Tuition and fees (and room rent and meal charges for those living in University residence halls) are due at the beginning of each new semester. No exceptions are made to this requirement. Since the expenses listed above are estimates for the full academic year, students will pay half the academic year total in August for the Fall Semester and the other half at the end of December for the Spring Semester that begins in January.

It is important for the student to know his/her government's regulations on currency exchange and be informed of bank procedures for money transfers to the United States in order to make timely payments.

We advise students not to carry large sums of money with them when they come to the U.S. For information about payment of tuition and fees, go to the Bursar's web site: www.units.muohio.edu/bur/payinfo

Statement of Responsibility

Students admitted to Miami University must have adequate financial support to cover all tuition and fees as well as all living expenses for the time required to earn the degree. Students who have scholarship awards or grants from a sponsoring agency or institution must present a letter from their sponsor which (1) certifies the amount to be paid by the sponsor and (2) provides instructions to the Bursar of the University if the sponsor is to be billed for tuition, fees and other charges.

Financial aid, assistantships and scholarships

Financial assistance for international students is very limited, especially for undergraduates, and competition for awards is keen.

Graduate Students

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate applicants may apply for graduate assistantships, which cover the cost of tuition and pay a small salary in exchange for work within your department of major. The work may include teaching, reading examinations, and/or assisting in research or in a laboratory. (The department of English does not award graduate assistantships to first-year international students.) Graduate assistants usually work from 10 to 20 hours per week.

In most cases, the salary is enough to cover living expenses. However, the modified graduate assistantships offered by some departments pay only half as much as other assistantships and are not adequate to cover all living expenses. The School of Business Administration offers only the modified assistantship to graduate students.

You can apply for a graduate assistantship at the same time you apply for admission. Three letters of recommendation are required.

The university must have your completed application on file by February 1 if you are applying for financial assistance to begin in the fall semester.

Graduate Grant-in-Aid

Waives the Non-Resident Tuition and the Instructional Fee. Contact gradschool@muohio.edu to get an application and information. Deadline is Feb. 1 for Fall and Oct. 1 for Spring Semester.

Undergraduate Students

Miami University receives applications for admission from international undergraduate students from more than 50 countries around the world. In order to recognize these academically talented students and attract them to join our university community, Miami provides a limited number of merit-based scholarships called International Education Scholarships. These renewable scholarship awards (available only to degree candidates in F-1 or J-1 status) range in values up to $10,000 per year. For information on tuition and fees, see below. Since the number of scholarship awards is limited, students should have achieved outstanding academic records and competitive test scores to be considered. Although financial need is not considered in the awarding of these merit-based financial awards, the International Education Scholarships do enable many international students with modest financial need to attend and graduate from Miami University.

All international undergraduate applicants who complete their applications for admission by March 1 (for the fall semester) or October 1 (for the spring semester) are considered for an International Education Scholarship. However, scholarships are generally not available to students entering in the spring semester. Although no separate application is required in order to be considered for an International Education Scholarship, all applicants who wish to enroll at Miami as F-1 or J-1 students must still complete Sections A and B of the Confidential Financial Statement in the Common Application Supplement for International Students and submit supporting financial documentation.

Student employment

Contact Molly Heidemann for information on employment.

For F-1 Students:

  • On-campus employment does not need any special authorization, however we advise that you do not work during your first semester at Miami . A maximum of 20 hrs/wk is allowed during school year; but can be full-time during vacation periods. Assistantship hours are counted in total hrs.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) - You are given 12 months of OPT that can be used either part-time (20 hrs/wk) during school year or full-time during the summer months and/or after completion of studies. F-1 students get 12 months of OPT after each degree level (Bachelor's, Master's & Ph.D). Work must be related to your field of study, and you must be in valid student status for one full academic year before you are eligible. No job offer is required for post-completion OPT. Fee required; apply early. For information, go to: OPT Information(pdf)
  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) - This type of employment can be authorized only if you are earning academic credit for the employment or if it is required for the degree. You must be in full-time student status for one full academic year before you are eligible to apply. No fee required. For information, go to: CPT Information(pdf)
  • Employment due to economic hardship - You can apply for this type of employment if an unexpected, severe economic circumstance should arise, i.e. sponsor loses job, you lose your assistantship, currency rates drop dramatically, etc. Authorization is for part-time (20 hrs/wk) during school year or full-time during periods of vacation, and does not have to be related to your field of study. You must be in valid F-1 status for one full academic year before you are eligible to apply. Fee required. For information, go to: Economic Hardship(pdf)

For J Exchange Visitors:

  • J-1 - Academic Training - You are given 18 months of this type of employment that can be used either part-time during school year or full-time after completion of studies. You must have an offer of employment that is related to your field of study, and authorization is given by your sponsor (the organization or institution that issue your DS-2019).
  • J-2 - Spouses of J-1s can apply for employment authorization from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. For more info, see: J-2 Work Authorization(pdf)
