Exchange Programs
This is one of several types of programs at Miami University. Click here for a description of different program types.
As an exchange student, you are directly enrolled as a student in a foreign university, participating in your host campus' student life as an international student. This is often a choice for students who wish to improve foreign language skills through full language immersion (though options are also available to take courses in English) or for those students who want full cultural immersion. Your participation in an exchange program also allows Miami to enrich its campus community by welcoming an exchange student from your host university or from another country altogether. If you have Miami University scholarships, they can be applied to any exchange programs. Contact a study abroad adviser for more information or for an exchange program application.
Reciprocal Exchange Programs (operated by the Office of International Education)
These are programs where Miami University has made an exchange agreement with an individual university abroad.
ISEP Exchanges
Through the International Student Exchange Program, Miami University students have access to universities in more than 35 countries, where they can take classes in English or in the native languages of the country.
Departmental Exchanges (operated by Academic Departments)
Applying for an Exchange Program
Depending on the program, applications are available either online or in the Office of International Education. Please talk to a study abroad adviser if you are interested in participating in any exchange program - they will guide you through the application process. If you are planning on participating in an exchange program, please remember that applications may be due anywhere from 4 to 9 months before your program begins, depending on the program. Please understand that enrolling in an exchange program is a commitment: a student from another country will be enrolled at Miami to reciprocate for your participation and your cancellation could cost them the opportunity to study here.
Studying Abroad on an Exchange Program
After you have been accepted to your exchange program, you may begin the process of applying for your travel documentation. See the Before You Leave and Students Currently Abroad sections for more information. During your program, please collect any syllabi and course materials for the classes you take and turn these in to Miami upon your return in order to facilitate the timely transfer of credit.
