Major
Requirements in History for the B.A. degree
for students who entered Miami University
in the 2000-01 through 2004-05 academic years.
Students
must complete the Miami Plan for Liberal Education Requirement,
the College of Arts and Science Requirement (CAS), and the
major Requirements in History. Please consult the appropriate
edition of the General Bulletin for detailed information
on university and divisional requirements.
Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.0
(a "C") in all courses taken in the major department.
History majors may not apply work taken "credit/no
credit" to History Major Requirements. Students should
be advised that national surveys have suggested that "credit/no
credit" work on a transcript may have a negative effect
upon one's chances for admission to graduate or professional
schools.
History Majors must take a minimum of 30 semester credit
hours as specified below. The department recommends but
does not require that students take a year-long course sequence
in chronological order. For example, HST 122 may be taken
before HST 121, or HST 308 before HST 307.
1.
Introductory Surveys. You must take 12
semester hours from these. One of these must be HST 121
or HST 197 (formerly numbered HST 297).
HST
111, 112 (3, 3), Survey of U.S. History
HST 121, 122 (3, 3), History of Western Civilization
HST 197, 198 (3, 3), World History (formerly numbered HST 297, 298)
2. Advanced
Hours. All undergraduate majors must complete
satisfactorily at least 15 advanced hours (200 and above)
of undergraduate history, distributed as follows. Only six
of these hours may be at the 200-level; the remaining hours
must be at 300- or 400-level. HST 297 and 298 may not be
applied to upper-level hours in the major.
a. Geographical fields. Each major must complete at least
3 upper-division history hours (usually one course) in each
of three fields:
1)
U.S. History
2) European History (includes Greek and Roman history)
3) Non-Western History (includes ancient history other
than Greek and Roman, as well as Latin American, Asian
and African history)
Some courses will fit more than one of these areas, but
a student may apply a particular course to only one of
the three fields. Note: See the list of upper-division
history courses coded for these requirements. The annual
History Course Offerings list also notes the specific
requirements filled.
b. The
remaining 6 upper-level hours may be in any field of history.
c. One of the advanced three-hour courses must deal with
a pre-modern time period. See appendix for a list of courses
that fill this requirement.
3.
HST 400 (3), Senior
Capstone in History. All history majors must
take a Senior Capstone in History, preferably in their senior
year. The several sections offered each semester deal with
specialized topics which are described in the annual History
Course Offerings booklet. This will fulfill the Capstone
Experience requirement in the Miami Plan.
