Iran, formerly known as "Persia," is one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations. Iran is situated east of Iraq; to the north, it borders on former Soviet Central Asian countries including Armenia, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan. It also borders on Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east, and Turkey to the west.
