RUSSIA’S ENVIRONMENT:
Prospects and Possibilities
October 24-26, 2002

The Institute of Environmental Sciences, Miami University, is hosting a symposium on environmental issues in Russia in Oxford, Ohio.

The focus of this symposium is to understand environmental conditions in Russia, for physical and biological perspectives, as well as institutional, historical, legal, and policy perspectives. Symposium participants will develop an action agenda for universities to engage in research, edication and action on Russia's environmental issues.

Keynote addresses will be given by:

  • Alexsey Yablokov, President of the Center for Russian Environmental Policy, Moscow; and former Adviser on Environment to Boris Yeltsin;
  •  
     
  • Vera Mischenko, President of Ecojuris, an NGO in Moscow working on environmental issues through the Russian court system; winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize; and founder of the Russian Network of Environmental Lawyers;
  •  
     
  • Alexsei Yaroshenko, forest campaigner with Greenpeace Russia, and author of a new set of maps of intact forests in Russia;
  •  
     
  • Speakers from the United States will come from government, non-governmental organizations, and the academic community, and will include both invited speakers and authors of contributed papers. Issues related to forests, water and related land resources, radioactive materials, mining, and biodiversity will be featured.

The symposium is sponsored by Miami University's Institute of Environmental Sciences, the Department of Geography, the Program in International Studies, and the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies. The symposium is open to members of the academic community, both faculty and students; government; non-governmental organizations; and the general public. Attendance will be limited to 200.

Registration is $200; $50 for students. Housing is available in Oxford at rates ranging from $73 to $98 per night plus tax.
