Urban & Regional Planning / Miami Plan & College of Arts & Sciences Courses

Courses Required or Recommended for the Miami Plan and College of Arts & Science

All Urban and Regional Planning majors must meet the requirements of the Miami Plan requirements (MP) and the College of Arts and Science requirements (CAS). The following guidelines are provided to help select appropriate courses.

  • MP-I English Composition. English 111-112 or 115-116. This requirement should be completed by all students during their first year.
  • CAS-A Foreign Language. All Arts & Science students must reach proficiency at the 202 level (or equivalent) by passing the 202 course (or equivalent) or passing the waiver or advancement placement examinations. Students should take whatever language is of particular interest, although some Urban and Planning majors have selected Spanish, an important second language in the South and Southwest US, where an increasing percentage of planning jobs are concentrated.
  • MPF-II Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Twelve hours are required.
    • Ideas in Western Architecture (ARC 188) is recommended. ARC 188 can count as either Fine Arts (II-A) or Humanities (II-B). ARC 188 also meets the Miami Plan historical perspective requirement. However, ARC 188 does not simultaneously count for CAS-B.
    • Public Administration (POL 261) is required for the Urban and Regional Planning major and counts for MPF IIC and CAS C.
  • MP-III Cultures
    • Global Forces, Local Diversity (GEO 101) is required for the major and counts for MPF III-B and CAS-C.
    • Geography of Urban Diversity (GEO 201) is required for the major and meets the MP-III-A and CAS-C requirement.
  • MP-IV Natural Science CAS-D Natural Science. Select courses that simultaneously count for MP-IV and CAS-D.
  • CAS-E Formal Reasoning. Students who do not have a strong background in mathematics should take a 100-level math class to fulfill the requirement. The appropriate math course can be selected from the placement guide in the catalog. Students with a strong math background can take STA 261 to fulfill both this CAS and a major requirement. Urban and Regional Planning majors should take STA 261.S, a special statistics section for social science majors. This course should be taken prior to the planning core courses.
  • Thematic Sequence.Urban and Regional Planning majors have selected a wide variety of Thematic Sequences. Among those relatively close to urban planning are: ARC 1-Urban Issue of Public Welfare and Policy; ECO 2-Markets, Institutions, and the Role of Government; and POL 6-Public Management. Urban and Regional Planning majors may not take the Urban Geography sequence (GEO 1). Students should select something interesting, not necessarily relevant to the major.
  • Capstone. Urban and Regional Planning majors are encouraged to take one of these three capstones, if convenient: GEO 491-Senior Seminar; GEO 492-Geography of the Auto Industry; and GEO 493-Urban Field Experience.
