Job Market
In
2004 the field of Geospatial
Technology was recognized by
the U.S. Department of Labor
"as one of the three most
important emerging and
evolving fields" (Nature, Jan 22,
2004). Specifically, "increasing
demand for readily available,
consistent, accurate, complete, and
current geographic information
and the widespread availability
and use of advanced technologies
offer great job opportunities
for people with many different
talents and educational
backgrounds" (U.S. Geological
Survey and U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics).
The American Society of
Photogrammetry and Remote
Sensing (ASPRS), the imaging
and geospatial information
professional society, acknowledges
the important role that certificate
programs in this technology play
in opening doors to employment
within the field and also for
preparation for further formal
education.
The journal Nature also reported
in 2004 that "from military
planning to real estate, geospatial
technologies have changed the
face of geography and broadened
job prospects across public and
private sectors."
