What is GISci?
GISci is a suite of techniques for collecting, analyzing, and communicating information about the Earth's surface through technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), satellite and aerial imaging, and global positioning systems. GISci technologies are applied to problems in fields ranging from environmental science to business decision-making.
Who is the Certificate intended for?
Anyone! The GISci Certificate can either be a part of a broader baccalaureate program, Associate's degree, or non-degree continuing education. If you have an interest in the GISci technologies and how they integrate into different disciplines, then this certificate is for you.
Why is this new Certificate being offered by Miami University?
The University recognizes that this geospatial technology is applicable to a wide-range of professional and technical careers. Providing students with the tools and knowledge to use this technology will enhance their ability to secure jobs in various fields, as well as provide necessary hands-on experience.
Specifically, the Department of Geography at Miami University has been teaching courses in Geographic Information Sciences, Remote Sensing, Air Photo Interpretation, and related topics for many years. The Department has several faculty members and a GIS Coordinator who teach these courses and use geospatial technologies in their own research.
The Department in Oxford has a Geographic Information Systems Lab equipped with 26 computers with the necessary software packages. The regional campuses also have similar facilities.
Where is the Certificate offered?
The GISci Certificate is available on any of the Miami University regional campuses: Oxford, Hamilton, and Middletown.
