Planning Intern Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is seeking a Planning Intern to assist the Programming & Planning Department. This is a temporary summer intern position. 

DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Director of Programming & Planning, the Planning Intern will assist in the analysis and graphing of data released from the 2010 Census to determine what information will provide support to RTA in its operations, planning and funding.  Information must comply with Title VI, FTA regulations and Language Equivalency requirements. Information will allow RTA to plot demographic changes surrounding its stations, routes and facilities.  The Planning Intern will provide assistance on the Blue Line Alternative Analysis project; assist with planning studies for the Westside Transit Center, Woodhill Station, Blue Line Extension and the Strategic Plan, and will also provide assistance with the upgrading of the RTA signage manual. The intern will be responsible for data analysis and GIS mapping.

 REQUIREMENTS:  Applicant must have completed the first year of Graduate school with studies in Urban Planning, Design and Development is preferred.  Experience in computerized l research and experience with GIS is required. WAGE RATE:   $15.00 per hour

Transportation Planning Internship Licking County

The Licking County Area Transportation Study (LCATS), the Metropolitan Planning Organization for Licking County, Ohio, is accepting applications for a College Intern to assist the LCATS staff in the development of GIS data layers, traffic count program and other transportation studies. Position offers a full- time seasonal work schedule (40 hours/week) May/June-August/September. Occasional other hours for special events.

Qualified applicants should have an interest in transportation planning and be enrolled in a course of study to obtain a degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Computer Science, Geography, Public Administration or related field. Candidates must be proficient in windows based computer applications. Knowledge of Arc GIS (Esri) software is preferred, but not required. This position requires regular exposure to outside weather conditions and traffic and the ability to move and/or lift up to 65 pounds of traffic counting equipment. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record is required. Salary $9.20-$12.26 per hour depending on qualifications.

Department of Geography Searches for Assistant Professor in Urban Planning and Sustainability

Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) seeks a full-time, assistant professor in urban planning and sustainability for a joint appointment in the Department of Geography and Institute for the Environment and Sustainability. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in geography or urban planning or cognate design field, with expertise in planning principles/techniques and their application to sustainability issues. They will be expected to initiate an active research agenda, engage students in community-based learning, and connect these to effective service. They will contribute courses on urban development and sustainability, and upper-division courses on advanced planning techniques as they relate the urban environment.  Candidates should have professional or other policy-relevant experience, technical skills in GIS or design, and enthusiasm for community engagement in U.S. or international settings. Remuneration includes salary and benefits, including health insurance. Ph.D. required at time of appointment. Screening begins November 1, 2012 and continues until the position is filled.

Butler County Department of Development

The Butler County Department of Development is currently seeking applicants for a part‐time (minimum 8 hours per week) planning internship starting in May 2012. The successful intern will be a motivated self‐starter who can complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision. Responsibilities of the position include developing a familiarity with the following: general planning and zoning administration

  • plan review and preparation of staff reports
  • presentations before boards and commissions
  • data analysis and GIS map production
  • regional economic development efforts
  •  fieldwork and data collection
  •  special planning studies, as applicable

Interns will additionally have the opportunity to pursue a locally‐focused planning project of individual interest, under the guidance of Department staff and subject to departmental needs.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program related to urban planning or economic development and should have completed at least three semesters of coursework in their program. Excellent research and writing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office software is expected. A personal vehicle and valid driver’s license are required for field work. The primary work location for this position is in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.

GEO Major Brad Kasberg Wins Goldman Prize to Work with Miami Tribe

Miami University senior Brad Kasberg, recipient of the $30,000 Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Prize, will spend a year after graduation working with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to develop a sustainable land use plan that will address the cultural, ecological, and economic needs of the tribe.

GEO major Brad Kasberg wins Goldman Prize

The Goldman prize annually allows a Miami senior to realize a dream. It gives students with exceptional promise the gift of time to pursue ideas and activities that will enrich their later work and careers. The prize is believed to be among the largest undergraduate awards in the country.

Kasberg, a member of the Miami Nation of Indiana, a geography and anthropology double major and an urban planning and regional analysis minor, is well positioned to carry out his project.

“As a Miami, I have invaluable resources of knowledge granted from my interactions with the Myaamia Project and the rest of the tribal community,” Kasberg said.

The Myaamia Project is a tribal initiative with Miami University to advance the Miami tribe’s language and revitalization efforts.

Kasberg will:
• conduct an analysis of zinc, lead and cadmium contamination of soil and water on Miami tribal land and map the widespread contamination of the tribal land;
• cultivate plants culturally significant to the tribe and analyze them for zinc, lead and cadmium contamination; and
• develop a sustainable land use plan for the tribe.

“Appropriate land use will vary according to levels of contamination on these lands, yet the degree of lead contamination across these lands has not been comprehensively defined,” Kasberg said.

Kasberg is a geography and anthropology double major and an urban planning and regional analysis minor, and participated in the department’s Wilks Scholar Shaping Sustainable Communities cohort. “I consider the Shaping Sustainabilities cohort to define my time here at Miami University, as it has shaped my interests and goals since my sophomore year,” Kasberg said. “Without this cohort, I may never have been introduced to the importance of urban planning, environmental studies and the real world politics that entangle these issues.

These talks are open to the public and touch upon topics as varied as urban transportation, geopolitics, remote sensing, and cartography. Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) has one full time (30-40 hours per week) planning/GIS internship position open during the Spring quarter of 2012 (approx. March 19, 2012 to June 8, 2012) to assist with various regional planning activities, including:

* Long and Short-Range Transportation Planning

* Special Planning Studies

* Land Use Planning

* Data Update, Data Analysis and Map Production using Geographic Information System (GIS)

* Field Surveys/Data Collection

Applicants should possess: knowledge of planning principles and practices; working knowledge of GIS; familiarity with research techniques; skill in the use of various basic software (word processing, databases, spreadsheet, etc).

Minimum Qualifications:

* Must be currently enrolled in a degree (undergraduate or graduate) program in planning, geography, or related field

* Must have completed a minimum of two years of Bachelor’s degree program course work.

* A personal vehicle to drive and a valid drivers license are required (field work)

* Some practical professional experience preferred.

New York City Urban Fellows Program

Recent Urban and Regional Planning graduates have successfully applied to the The Urban Fellows Program sponsored by The City of New York.  The program is designed to introduce America’s finest college students and graduates to local government and public service.

The Urban Fellows Program is a highly selective, nine-month fellowship which combines work in Mayoral offices and City agencies with an intensive seminar series that explores current urban issues impacting public policy. Program participants are diverse and come from all over the country to work in New York City. After participating in an extensive interview process, New York City Urban Fellows are placed at an array of agencies across the City where they learn about public policy through a hands-on approach. This knowledge is supplemented by a series of workshops that help promote a deep understanding of the structure of New York City government.  The program seeks to ensure that every Urban Fellow comprehends the intricacies of City, State and Federal finance and the interaction between these levels of government. During the year, these lessons are further enhanced by group trips to Washington D.C. and Albany, where Fellows meet face-to-face with representatives and policy-makers who help shape life in New York City.

Each class of New York City Urban Fellows works from September through the middle of May. For their services, the program provides:

  • A nine-month stipend of $30,000
  • Health Insurance coverage
  • The Urban Fellows Program does not provide student loans, financial aid or scholarship for study. Housing for participants is not included.
