Mission and Goals

Mission

WE ARE a student-centered community of musicians committed to the transformational power of the arts. Students, faculty, and honored guests of the department celebrate music through creative and intellectual pursuits: learning and teaching, performance, composition, and research. As a vital component of a public university founded on the liberal arts, we cultivate an open environment that explores and encourages historical and non-traditional perspectives; this includes collaborations uniting us with all the arts as an integral part of the university. Our academic programs and supporting activities provide a learning environment focused on three purposes: preparation for professional careers in music, study of specialized music fields within a liberal arts program, and enrichment of university and regional culture through excellence in music.

Goals

1. To offer the highest level of education in music for students in our undergraduate and graduate programs: music education, performance, and liberal arts in music.
2. To provide performance and learning opportunities that enable all Miami students to achieve their full potential in the art of music.
3. To continually renew our dedication to an open and inclusive environment in which individuals celebrate differences.
4. To sustain an environment within the Department which is supportive and stimulating for the music faculty and which challenges them to explore exciting new ideas and reach their highest professional potential.
5. To provide artistic leadership in the university and to present a wide range of musical events enriching the lives of individuals on campus and in the community.

Objectives

1. To continue to increase the selectivity of our students while simultaneously working to control enrollment. To maintain our commitment to recruit undergraduate and graduate students characterized by diversity as well as strong musical and academic talents.
2. To achieve an approximate distribution of undergraduate students as follows: 60% music education, 30% performance, and 10% BA students; to increase our graduate percentage during the regular academic year to 10% from its current 7% level; to achieve a minority enrollment of at least 10%.
3. To encourage participation by all Miami students in our liberal education offerings and performing ensembles, as well as attendance at all arts events.
4. To work to provide the resources for all faculty so they have the support necessary to achieve their professional potential.
