Harvey Thurmer - Violin

Violinist HARVEY THURMER joined the faculty at Miami University in 1997, where he is an Assistant Professor of Violin and a member of the Oxford String Quartet. Since Harvey Thurmerhis appointment here, he has continued to perform nationally and internationally as a chamber musician and soloist.

A native of Tennessee, Mr. Thurmer received the Master of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory where his major mentors were Louis Krasner and Dorothy DeLay. He continued his study with Sander Vegh at the Salzburg Mozarteum and subsequently joined the Franz Schubert Quartet of Vienna. From 1983 until 1989 Mr. Thurmer performed regularly in Europe's major concert halls, including the Concertegebouw of Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Salle Gaveau in Paris. He has collaborated with cellist David Soyer, pianist Jorg Demus, clarinetist Peter Schmeidl of the Vienna Philharmonic, and violinist Sandor Vegh. As a chamber musician he has appeared twice at the Salzburg Festival, in 1983 and 1989, as well Thurmer CD'sas the Cheltenham Festival, and Lappland Festival in Sweden.

As a soloist Mr. Thurmer has performed in Salzburg, Vienna, Santiago Chile, Buenos Aires Argentina, and Lima Peru. He has been heard on Swedish, German, Austrian, and British radio,and has appeared in the Granada television series "Man and Music". Since his return to the United States he has completed a doctorate in performance and pedagogy from the University of Miami in Florida and a Masters degree in counseling. Prior to his joining the Oxford String Quartet, he was a member of the Gables String Quartet in Miami Florida, and the DaVinci Quartet of Colorado. He has held teaching positions at the Royal Northern College of Music in Kafka CDManchester England, the Graz Musickhochschule in Graz Austria, the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado. He currently serves as concertmaster of the Richmond Indiana Symphony, and is the director of the Salzburg Summer Chamber Music Institute, a two week seminar offered in June for advanced singers, pianists and string players.

In 2003 he released a recording of Gyorgy Kurtag’s Kafka Fragments with soprano Audrey Luna for the Ars Moderno label.
