First in 2009
A History of Accomplishments
2000-2006

In February 2000, President Garland called for Miami University to be the leader in the nation among public universities having a primary emphasis on undergraduate education with significant graduate and research programs. Since that call, the University has come together to embark on a planning process for improvement.

Progress Steps 2000-2006:

GOAL 1: Strengthen the Academic Qualifications of Students.

Enrollment Management Plans developed.

New Recruitment Efforts (Faculty Liaisons, Data-Driven Decision-Making, Common Application) instituted.

Campus tour, summer orientation, Red Carpet Days revised.

Tuition & Scholarship Plan created.

Miami accorded status as Truman Honor Institution. National Fellowship Steering Committee formed.

10X Post-Doctoral Program and DUOS (Doctoral-Undergraduate Support) Program begun.

Total dollar amount of grants won by faculty doubles in one year.

Series of faculty development workshops on inclusion implemented.

46 focus groups held to discuss ideas for a future Miami as a site of inclusive excellence. Ideas were used to frame future subcommittees for the First in 2009 Coordinating Council.

Major gifts secured, including $10.5 million for the Center for Writing Excellence, $30 million for the Richard T Farmer School of Business facilities, $10 million for student scholarships, $10 million for the John T. Petters Center for Leadership, Ethics and Skills Development, and $4 million for an Asian Business Chair.

Four regional fundraising campaigns launched.

GOAL 8: Improve Benchmarking With Peer Institutions.

95% of academic departments provide ideas for their long-term improvement.

2001-03

Benchmarking exercise undertaken by 186 departments, divisions and units.

2004

Benchmarking practices folded into program review process.

2003-05

Self-study and accreditation review process completed; Miami accorded its diennial re-accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission.

2004

Assessment Fellows and Assessment Council established. A host of assessment projects (Outcomes in the Major, Critical Thinking project, Diversity Outcomes for US Cultures Courses, Assessment Briefs) begun.

2005

Employer survey conducted.

2006

Director of Institutional Research is hired.
