Goal
2: Greater Academic Support for Faculty
Miami's faculty has always been one of its
greatest assets, and as Miami's third century
approaches, our faculty has even a larger
role to play. This role extends well beyond
imparting the knowledge and understanding
that are the content of a Miami education.
Our faculty must also serve as mentors and
role models who lead by example. To cultivate
in our students the skills of critical thinking,
productive intellectual inquiry, and lifelong
learning, our faculty needs the increased
support for their classroom and research activities
that First in 2009 is designed to provide.
- Promotion and Tenure Requirements
Toughened and Clarified - Competition
to attract and retain top faculty has increased
over the past generation, and it is likely
to continue to do so. Newly
strengthened
tenure and promotion standards will enable
prospective and current faculty members
to better understand and surpass the high
expectations this university has of them.
- Departmental Teaching Plans Revised
- High quality teaching is at the
heart of the Miami experience. We intend
to carry forward this key part of the university's
spirit into our third century and beyond.
New teaching plans, created by each department,
formalize the strategies and techniques
of Miami's best and most effective classroom
instructors.
- Fifty New Faculty Lines Allocated – Over the next several years, Miami will increase its tenure-track faculty by 50 in order to meet the growing needs of our students, respond to today’s changing contours of knowledge, and promote research excellence.
- 10X Post-Doctoral Program
- This exciting program provides faculty
who are successful in writing grants the
support of a post-doctoral student. As a
result of this program and other forms of
support, the total dollar amount of grants
won by faculty has markedly expanded.
- National Award for Faculty Development Won -
The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching recently received the prestigious Hesburgh Award for its outstanding faculty learning communities.
