Jeff Sommers receives E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award
2004
Jeff Sommers, professor of English at Miami Middletown, was named a recipient of the E. Phillips Knox Teaching Award at the university's Dec. 17 commencement.
The $3,000 award was established by E. Phillips Knox (Miami ’68) to recognize creative, innovative and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level. Miami’s committee on the enhancement of learning and teaching selected him for the honor.
This is the 10th year the award has been presented. Philip Cottell, professor of accountancy at Miami, also received the award on Dec. 17.
"Both are gifted and enthusiastic teachers who have exceptional reputations for their commitment to innovations in teaching," said President James Garland in making the presentations. "In addition to fostering students’ critical thinking skills they each have a strong interest in curriculum design and see teaching as an interactive, collaborative endeavor."
