Overview
Regional Campuses
Students considering English may also complete many of the requirements toward the English degree on the regional campuses at Hamilton or Middletown. English courses offered at the regional campuses are open to all Miami students. Information about these courses, professors, and costs can be found on each regional campus web site.
Miami’s English Department offers four majors: Creative Writing, Linguistics, Literature, and Technical and Scientific Communication. The department also offers four minors, and eight thematic sequences covering the entire range of writing, literature, theory, cultural studies, film, and linguistics.
The study of English revolves around three basic topics: the literary traditions of the English language, primarily British and American; the craft of writing; and the structure and evolution of the language itself.
Our course offerings typically range from introductory courses on themes such as travel, sexuality, and identity, through upper division courses in significant periods, authors, and trends. We also offer custom-designed capstones that engage students with current and exciting topics in literature and writing.
Our courses in literature consider both historical and contemporary approaches to British, American, colonial and postcolonial Anglophone, African American, Asian American, Latino/ Latina, and women’s literatures. Other courses introduce students to alternate forms, including film, television, media, and cultural texts.
Our writing courses provide students with introductory and advanced work in composition, creative writing, and technical communication. All courses are taught by a distinguished faculty who put their award-winning teaching experience, their accomplished research and publication records, and their varied professional expertise to work in the university classroom.
The department also offers courses in a variety of critical approaches to language and literature, including linguistic analysis, critical theory, and interdisciplinary literary and cultural study.
Study Abroad
English students sometimes choose to study abroad, often at Miami’s Luxembourg campus. This campus offers Miami students opportunities to live with a Luxembourg-ish family and interact on a daily basis with international students and cultures.
Students may also study abroad in London, either in the English Department’s Literary London program, or through the Miami University Royal Holloway semester in England. Please see our Study Abroad page for more information.
