English Department Undergraduate Scholarships
Application deadline for 2008: Friday, March 28
Each year the Department has a handful of endowed scholarships to award to majors. The scholarships are, with one exception, open to majors in English-Literature, English-Creative Writing, and Technical and Scientific Communication. English-Journalism and Journalism majors are not eligible for these scholarships; the several endowed scholarships for those majors will be handled through the Journalism Program.
This year, the Undergraduate Studies Committee decided to ask students to apply, submitting a writing sample and names of faculty references. Application forms are now available at the front desk in Bachelor 356, as well as for download on this page.
Instructions on how to apply
Please print out the application form, and follow the instructions in it.
You will need to submit, along with the application form, the documents listed below. Turn in your application at the front desk of the Department of English, 356 Bachelor Hall.
- A 5-to-7 page paper written in an English course, or a 5-to-7 page excerpt from a longer paper;
- A brief statement placing the paper in context, identifying the course, explaining the assignment, and stating the reason for choosing the topic (and, for an excerpt, explaining how and why you excerpted this portion);
- An informal transcript (Registrar’s seal not needed).
