English Department Undergraduate Scholarships
Application deadline for 2013: March 8, 2013
Each year the Department has a handful of endowed scholarships to award to majors. The scholarships are, with one exception, open to majors in English-Literature, English-Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Technical and Scientific Communication. English-Journalism and Journalism majors are not eligible for these scholarships; the several endowed scholarships for those majors will be handled through the Journalism Program.
Instructions on how to apply
Please print out the application form, and follow the instructions in it.
Along with the application form, the documents listed below must be submitted to the Department of English, 356 Bachelor Hall.
- A 5-to-7 page paper or its equivalent written in an English course, or a 5-to-7 page excerpt from a longer paper (with a brief contextualizing note);
- An informal transcript (Registrar’s seal not needed).
- Two English Scholarship Recommendation Forms, completed and submitted by English Department faculty. Students are responsible for soliciting these recommendations and for making sure faculty turn the forms in by the deadline.
Note: Students must also file a FAFSA with the Office of Student Financial Assistance (this helps determine level of need for some scholarships).

*Students apply in the spring of 2013 for scholarships that count towards the 2013-14 academic year. Therefore, to be eligible for these scholarships, you must have junior or senior status by the beginning of the coming fall semester (Fall 2013). This is what is meant by a “rising junior” or a “rising senior.” If you are currently a graduating senior this academic year (i.e. you plan to graduate in December, May or August of the 2012-13 academic year), you are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.
