American Literature
The American Literature minor is not open to majors in Literature, Creative Writing, or Journalism. This minor does not automatically include a Thematic Sequence.
Minor Requirements
1. Introduction to American Literature (6 hours).
Choose two of these:
- ENG 141 Life and Thought in American Literature, to 1865
- ENG 142 Life and Thought in American Literature, 1865-1945
- ENG 143 Life and Thought in American Literature, 1945-Present
2. Theme or Genre Study (3 hours).
Choose one of these:
- ENG 232 American Women Writers
- ENG 261 Modern Drama
- ENG 282 American Fiction
- ENG 283 Modern Poetry
- ENG 336 African American Writing, 1746-1877 (cross-listed with BWS)
- ENG 337 African American Writing, 1878-1945 (cross-listed with BWS)
- ENG 338 African American Writing, 1946-Present (cross-listed with BWS)
- ENG 450 Studies in Genre
3. Period Study (3 hours).
Choose one of these:
- ENG 349 Colonial and Early National American Literature, to 1810
- ENG 352 American Literature, 1810-1865
- ENG 353 American Literature, 1865-1914
- ENG 354 American Literature, 1914-1945
- ENG 355 American Literature, 1945-Present
4. Additional Hours of Advanced Study (6 hours).
Choose two additional courses from the courses listed in requirements 2 and 3 above.
Note: At least one of the courses used to meet requirements 2, 3, or 4 must emphasize literature written before World War I (282, 336, 349, 352, or 353).
