Credit for transfer students
Advanced Placement Credit
Students whose AP scores exempted them from part or all of the composition requirement at their previous institution are not exempted from the composition requirement at Miami. First–year and sophomore transfer students should complete the requirement by enrolling in the appropriate composition course(s). Junior or senior transfer students may submit a transfer portfolio of their writing; information packets are available from the Director of College Composition.

Transfer Course Evaluation
Students who earned credit in composition courses at other institutions should first have their courses evaluated by the Registrar. If a composition course transfers but is not applied to any requirements, the student may request the Director of College Composition to evaluate course materials (catalog description, syllabus, writing assignments, graded papers) and have the credits applied to the composition requirement.
Quarter to Semester Hours
Students transferring from institutions on the quarter system still need to complete six hours in composition. Students with five transfer hours typically complete the sixth hour by doing a writing-intensive independent study attached to one of their Miami courses, which need not be an English course. Students interested in this option should consult the Director of College Composition and the Office of Liberal Education.
