Earn Credit in English

Portfolio Program

High School seniors are encouraged to submit a writing portfolio to Miami’s English department to be considered for credit toward the entry-year composition requirement. The portfolio consists of three pieces of writing and a letter that reflects on the three pieces. Each year, over half of the students who apply receive credit.

For information regarding details and deadlines for submission, contact the English Department at 513-529-5221, or visit the Portfolio Program website.

Advanced Placement Exam

Students receive six hours of credit for ENG 111 and 112, either by scoring a 5 on the AP Exam or on the English Department’s Writing Portfolio.

Students receive three hours of credit for English 111 by scoring a 4 on the AP Exam or on the Writing Portfolio.

Students who have earned three hours of advanced credit for English 111 must enroll in ENG 113, which replaces ENG 111-112 and meets the First-Year Seminar requirement of the Miami Plan.

Students who earn six hours of credit through advanced placement, transfer credit, or portfolio have also met the First-Year Seminar requirement of the Miami Plan.

Contact the Registrar’s office at 513-529-8703 for further information. You may also contact the Director of College Composition, John Tassoni.

Post-secondary credit options

Every year, outstanding students from area schools participate in Miami’s Post-Secondary plan and take classes on campus. This program provides an opportunity for outstanding high school students to earn college credit.

Other criteria vary by grade level. Students should first consult with their high school guidance counselors. Questions regarding admission to Miami and eligibility should be directed to the appropriate Office of Admission (Hamilton, Middletown, or Oxford).

Scholastic Writing Awards

Miami University English Department hosts an annual writing awards program to evaluate and honor writing from high school students across Southwest Ohio. Area schools bring teams of students to share their writing, receive feedback, and collaborate with other high school writing scholars. Students who are interested in this program should encourage their high school English teacher to contact Jeff Sommers at 513-727-3260.
