Latin American Studies
The minor in Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program open to all majors at Miami University. It aims to introduce students to Latin America from the different but mutually enriching perspectives of the humanities, social sciences and physical sciences in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the region’s cultures, economies, social and political systems, literature, history, and geography. Service learning with Latino/a and Latin American communities in Ohio and diverse study abroad opportunities promote the active application of interdisciplinary and international knowledge to issues relevant to students’ lives and vital to today’s changing world.
Established in 1986 the minor program fosters interdisciplinary research and teaching among its affiliated faculty while offering a coherent curriculum for students interested in developing foreign language skills and acquiring multidisciplinary competence in this important region of the world. The LAS Program encourages study abroad among its students, it organizes an annual co-curricular lecture series, and it coordinates extracurricular student activities intended to enrich their learning experience. In collaboration with cognate departments and with the Latin and American Student Association (ALAS), the LAS Program also helps students participate in internship and public service programs.
