Life after the Ph.D.
The doctoral program’s training at Miami, with its dual emphasis on course work and teaching experience, prepares doctoral students well for competing in today’s job market. Our recent graduates, from 2003 to 2006, have gone on to hold tenure-track positions in higher education at a diverse range of schools—from research institutions including University of West Virginia, University of Kentucky, and University of South Carolina, to four-year institutions like California State University at San Luis Obispo, East Central State University (Oklahoma), Francis Marion University, John Carroll University, University of Houston (Downtown), University of South Alabama, and University of Southern Indiana, to two-year institutions such as University of Cincinnati (Clermont Campus).
The most recent MLA survey, which covered graduates who received their degrees between September 1, 2000 and August 31, 2001, reports that of the 976 English graduates, 410 (42.0%) obtained tenure-track jobs, and 413 (42.3%) obtained non-tenure-track positions. For the last four years, we have placed well over 50% of our graduates in tenure-track positions. In addition, we offer visiting assistant professorships to our few graduates who have not yet found jobs elsewhere.
