Graduate Program

Placement

Life after the M.A.

Most students who have completed the M.A. in Composition and Rhetoric in recent years are now pursuing the Ph.D. in the same field at Miami or at institutions such as Ohio State, University of Kansas, and Michigan Tech. Many M.A. graduates who have completed their doctorates already hold tenure-track assistant professorships. Recent M.A. graduates in Literature are now pursuing or are completing doctoral work at universities such as Chicago, Duke, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, and Washington, as well as here at Miami. Several 2001-06 graduates teach high school Advanced Placement English courses, and others have careers in educational publishing or administration.

A number of M.A. graduates in creative writing have enrolled in M.F.A. or Ph.D. programs. Two of our 2006 graduates, for example, start M.F.A. programs at Alabama and Vanderbilt this fall; another received a Fulbright grant to pursue his interest in translating Russian poetry at the Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature in Tbilisi. Graduates from 2000-2005 have completed or are completing advanced degree programs at Idaho, Maryland, Notre Dame, Southern Illinois, Cincinnati, Florida State, and Western Michigan, and two who received degrees this year have already secured tenure-track assistant professor positions (St. Andrews College, Pacific Lutheran University). Many others continue to teach and write, as well as publish their poetry, short stories, and novels.

Completing an internship and obtaining a degree in technical and scientific communication have led our students to nearly 100 percent placement in well-established and new businesses. Graduates have been hired at Ohio and Indiana businesses, locally in Oxford, Cincinnati, and Dayton, and more widely in Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, and across the United States. We take it as an indicator of the value of our students’ training that a significant number of businesses repeatedly hire our students as interns and full-time employees, often promoting them to managers or lead writers. Some of our graduates, combining their business acumen with skills they have gained in the MTSC program, have also established successful technical/scientific communication consulting firms. Some graduates, interested in further study in technical and scientific communication or other fields, have pursued Ph.D.s.
